Weather at Shelter Bay Marina

As in much of this region the cyclical movements of the Inter Tropical Convergence Zone controls the seasons of which there are two, wet and dry. The dry season normally starts in late December and ends in Mid to late April. The rainy season is May to December with November typically bringing the most rain.  The movements of the ITCZ are not quite that regular and we often see variations of as much as a month. These variations are generally associated with the El Nino phenomenon.

Temperatures average in the mid 80’s range year around. Night time lows in the mid 70’s and daytime highs in the mid 90’s. Humidity is higher in the wet season often averaging around 80%.  In the dry season the humidity falls to 50-60% at Shelter Bay. Annual rain fall at Shelter bay around 160 inches much of which comes in the form of downpours that last one to three hours. 

Shelter Bay Marina will have a breeze almost all the time. The dry season winds are higher in the 18-20 knot range consistently out of the NE and these trade wind conditions can bring a heavy sea state to the area.

The wet season winds are in the 5-7 knot range with a westerly component to the wind. The rainy season brings tropical thunderstorms that are intense but short lived. Lightening and high winds can occur.

The hurricane belt is to the north of Panama! Hurricane season in the Caribbean means great weather in Panama as the clouds are blown to the north and east. In fact hurricane weather is the best time to make the Panama to Cartagena, Colombia passage as you can often have favorable winds and calm seas.

There are no important cold currents which reach Panama, sea surface temperatures are pretty constant in the low 80’s.
